Food Waste In Kentuckiana

Food waste is a major issue in our region.

Food waste is estimated to make up roughly 30% municipal solid waste (MSW) landfilled.

In our immediate region, 1 in 5 children struggle with food insecurity.

A reality we believe is unacceptable.

Each year, Kentucky Harvest rescues and delivers more than 2 million pounds of surplus food throughout Kentuckiana, serving communities across Jefferson, Oldham and Shelby counties in Kentucky, and Clark, Floyd and Harrison counties in Indiana.

That rescued food supports 60+ recipient organizations annually, including homeless shelters, addiction recovery centers, children’s programs, schools, food pantries and churches.

By rescuing food instead of letting it go to waste, we save our nonprofit partners over $4 million each year—resources they can reinvest into programs that strengthen the community.

Last year alone, rescued food from Kentucky Harvest helped provide nearly 2 million meals to people facing food insecurity across the region.
